BACK TO SCHOOL-- SORT OF...

I'm recently back from attending my first Writers' Police Academy in Green Bay, Wisconsin. Wow! What an amazing event. In addition to attending classes on Markers for Fake vs Genuine Suicide Notes, Death Scene Investigation, Fingerprinting, and Dogs, Dogs, Dogs (about working with Police Dogs), I also took part in three High Intensity Trainings: Building Search/Room Clearing, Defense and Arrest Tactics, and Shoot/Don't Shoot Scenario Training. That last one was a real adrenaline booster. Next time I attend, I want to try one of the driving classes!

Each morning we boarded a school bus and headed off to the Northeast Wisconsin Technical College for training. Learning about the inner workings of various aspects of policing and crime scene investigation was fascinating and fun. And, as an added bonus, I got to hang out with so many writers. The keynote by Craig Johnson -- of Longmire fame -- was inspirational and entertaining. The man really knows how to tell a story! By the time the conference wrapped up, I'd won a few books, bought some merch and got some fun swag!

This wonderful conference is put on by a team of volunteers and the organizational magic of Lee Lofland. Huge thanks also go to the Northeast Wisconsin Technical College for opening their campus to us, and to the Oneida Nation, the Radisson Green Bay, and all the wonderful speakers and campus guides.
